Target shooting has been an established and internationally recognised sport for several Centuries. It is also a sport in which Britain excels and the disproportionally large number of Olympic medals and medals in Commonwealth Games and international target shooting championships have been won by British shooting sportsmen.

Marksmanship is a skill that has been highly regarded by the military for a very long time and target shooting as a sport has its oringins in the 18th and 19th Centuries when wars were fought with many thousands of foot soldiers armed with muskets and later rifles.

In more recent wars, certainly The Great War of 1914 - 1918 and Second World War of 1939 - 1945, artillery and aircraft played the role more decisive than huge numbers of infantrymen armed with rifles and the technological advancements since then have made infantrymen armed with personal weapons more suited to the peacekeeping role.

The rifle remains the principal weapon in many Third World Wars, but in United Kingdom the sport of target shooting has become a true sport which promotes marksmanship for the purpose of hitting a target and winning shooting contests and competitions and its links with the needs for national defence have become more a matter of tradition and history than any close and practical connection.

The link with the defence of the realm has been made even more tenuous as a direct result of the ban of private ownership of pistols in the wake of the school shoting in Dunblane in March 1996.Ready for Priming
